Floral Park celebrates successful season

The Island Now

Although Floral Park Memorial’s boys varsity basketball team’s season did not end with a championship title, the team is still proud of the challenges they overcame.

The team started off the season strong winning their first four games, however, injuries contributed to a mid-season collapse, with the boys winning only one of their next six games. With a 5-5 record during the regular season, the team was faced with the challenge of playing the No. 1 seeded and undefeated Southside in the playoffs. Floral Park was victorious, thanks in part to Kevin Cluess’ 41 points and a monster block with seven seconds left that sealed a 2-point victory.

Next, the team faced No. 9 seeded Manhasset. Shadner Edouasie hit four three-pointers in the fourth quarter to lead Floral Park to a 12-point win.

The semifinals game against No. 12 seeded Carey was tough, but the Knights prevailed, winning by five points. These victories led to a Nassau County title showdown against Valley Stream South, the Knights’ conference rival and last year’s county champion, where Floral Park fell short by seven points.

The 2014-15 Floral Park Knights Varsity Boys Basketball team is the first 16th seeded team to appear in a Nassau County Basketball final since the seeding process began in 1964.
