Flower Hill awards $241K road project bid

Bill San Antonio

Flower Hill trustees on Monday awarded a bid to the East Moriches-based Rosemar Construction Corp. to repave several roads in the village.

Village of Flower Hill Mayor Elaine Phillips said Rosemar’s $241,653 bid came in substantially lower than the $300,000 appropriated for the project.

Scott Hislop, the village’s highway superintendent, and Charles Vachris, an engineer and member of the Flower Hill planning boar, each said they supported the decision to award the bid to Rosemar.

Vachris said he and Phillips plan to meet with Rosemar officials this week to discuss the terms of the contract and the roads involved in the project. Roadways slated for repair were not disclosed during the meeting.

Village Administrator Ronnie Shatzkamer said Tuesday that “bits and pieces” of the roads would be worked on, but said village officials have not fully prioritized which roads needed the most repair.

Phillips said work not done in 2014 could roll over into 2015.

In other developments:

• A resident of Colony Lane said skateboarders frequenting the street – about whom residents last month complained to the board – have moved on to “investigating other hills.”

He said he has seen skateboarders on Colony Lane six times since the board’s last meeting, always on weekends, and that he did not mind them using the roadway or meeting near his property.

Phillips said the village would monitor how often the skateboarders use the road and remove a No Skating sign a resident put up along Colony Lane sometime after Labor Day.

Trustee Karen Reichenbach said the village should also keep in mind the privacy rights of other Colony Lane residents.

• Shatzkamer in her administrator’s report said the village has had correspondence with Cablevision and Verizon about broadcasting village meetings, but said she was told by a Cablevision representative that Flower Hill would be responsible for also broadcasting the meetings of other Manhasset villages.

She said the village has the option of appearing on the Public Access Television network show, “Meet the Leaders,” in which officials could discuss village issues.

Phillips said the village “won’t rule it out” but the board did not decide on whether to continue a broadcast source for its meetings.

• Reichenbach said she is exploring the process of registering Flower Hill with the forestry management Tree City USA program.

“It’s really used to help people in this country understand the significance to the environment,” Reichenbach said.

• Trustees Eileen Mills and Randall Rosenbaum were not in attendance.
