Flower Hill mulls zoning code penalties amendment

Flower Hill trustees are considering an amendment to the village’s zoning code that would penalize homeowners whose building projects exceed the sizes approved in applications submitted to the village’s boards.

The law currently sets fines ranging from $170 to $10,000 on violations pertaining to a structure’s square footage, setback, sky plane and height, but trustees adjourned a public hearing on the proposal until their July 6 board meeting for additional tweaks.

The law was written to match similar fines set in the Town of North Hempstead’s building code, said Flower Hill Mayor Elaine Phillips, who noted that the town’s laws are violated sparingly throughout the year.

But trustees agreed the fines are not harsh enough as violation of the proposed law becomes more severe, and opted instead to consider further changes to the legislation.

In the next month, the village’s zoning board will also review the proposal and offer suggestions toward its improvement, officials said.

In other developments:

• Having received only one bid for a project to construct a pedestrian pathway along Stonytown Road into the village park, the board passed a resolution to put the work back up for bid.

In addition, the board authorized the village to begin collecting bids on its annual road improvement project, a $300,000 investment.

Phillips said that by putting the bid requests out at the same time, and independent of each other, contractors may be more enticed to take on both projects.

The board would like to spend about $40,000 on the pathway, officials said.

• A special-use permit was granted to North Hempstead Country Club for a fireworks display scheduled to take place July 2.
