Furman Film Series returns to Great Neck

The Gold Coast International Film Festival’s Winter 2015 Furman Film Series, currently being held at the Bow Tie Squire Cinemas in Great Neck, continues on Wednesday, Dec. 16 with its next film, “45 Years,” starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay. 

The UK entry, directed by Andrew Haigh, tells the tale of a Kate and Geoff, who, while preparing for their 45th anniversary, have their marriage shaken with a discovery that calls into question the life they’ve built together. 

Set against the backdrop of the English countryside, the film presents of a portrait of two people who question the depths of commitment. Rampling and Courtenay won Best Actress and Best Actor at the Berlinale for their performances.

The movie garnered six nominations at the 2015 British Independent Film Awards, won the Silver Bear for Best Actor & Actress at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival and was an official selection of both the 2015 Telluride International Film Festival and 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.

The next film scheduled in the Series is “In The Shadow Of Women,” slated for Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Directed by Philippe Garrel, the film takes a close look at infidelity — not merely the fact of it, but the particular, divergent ways in which it’s experienced and understood by men and women.  Stanislas Merhar and Clotilde Courau star in the movie, which was an official selection of the Cannes, Toronto International, and New York Film Festivals.

The Furman Film Series is dedicated to previewing the best new independent films and studio releases, along with Q&A’s from filmmakers and a wide array of industry professionals. The Series kicked off Dec. 2 with a screening of “A Royal Night Out,” starring Sarah Gadon and Bel Powley.

Bow Tie Squire Cinemas is located at 115 Middle Neck Road, Great Neck.  All movies begin at 7:30 p.m. (doors 7 p.m.) Subscription: $75 regular/$65 seniors; includes five screenings plus Q&As, priority seating, discounts at local restaurants, and more.
