Garden City, Manhasset split titles

Justin Guterding has known nothing but winning Long Island championships since joining the Garden City boys lacrosse team three years ago.

The Duke-bound senior wasn’t about to stop Saturday afternoon.

Guterding scored three goals, helping guide Garden City to a 9-4 win over Suffolk champion Miller Place in the Long Island Class B final at Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University.

The Trojans captured a fourth straight Long Island title and 17th overall and are scheduled to take on Niskayuna in the state Class B semifinals at Marist College in Poughkeepsie Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

“It’s unbelievable,” Guterding said. “Being a part of all four straight is really an unbelievable feeling. Leading this team, being captain, words can’t even describe this. It’s awesome.”

Guterding, who has 52 goals and 39 assists on the season, put Garden City (17-3) in front with 14 seconds left in the first quarter. Cody George and Lucas Clay added two goals apiece as Garden City raced out to a 4-0 lead and never trailed.

Dale Stasco and Georgetown-bound Ed Blatz also scored for the Trojans, who are attempting to win a second straight, and sixth overall, state title.

While competing for a state title has been a right of passage for the Garden City boys, that’s not the case for the Manhasset girls lacrosse team.

But after upsetting Garden City in the Nassau Class B final, the Indians captured their first Long Island title since 2005 after beating Eastport-South Manor, 11-7, at Adelphi University Sunday afternoon.

Manhasset, which ended Garden City’s seven-year reign as Nassau ‘B’ champions by winning 14-8, claimed three straight Long Island Class C titles from 2003-05 and captured the state ‘C’ title in 2003. The Indians moved up to Class B in 2011.

Leading the way for Manhasset (16-3) Sunday afternoon was Natalie Stefan, a Penn-bound junior who scored four goals, increasing her season total to 35. Harvard-bound junior middie Julia Glynn, who has 24 goals and 16 assists on the season, added three goals and an assist.

Katherine Hallet, Kellen D’Alleva, Emily Koufakis and Sarah Barcia, who will play at Penn next year, also scored for the Indians, who broke the game open in the second half after taking a 4-3 lead into the break.

Erin Coleman made eight saves, Erin Barry forced two turnovers and Bucknell-bound Maddy Molinari won seven draws for Manhasset, which will face Brighton in the state semifinals Friday at noon at SUNY-Cortland.
