GN buffet fundraiser to benefit cancer children

We Care, a subcommittee of the Great Neck Chamber of Commerce that seeks to raise money for non-profit organizations, will host an all-you-can-eat buffet fundraiser on Sept. 17 at the Inn at Great Neck at 30 Cutter Mill Road.

Ronald Samanowitz, chair of the We Care committee, said half of the proceeds from the event will benefit Friends of Karen, a non-profit organization that seeks to provide financial and emotional support to families of terminally-ill children.

“One of our members who did work for Friends of Karen suggested the idea,” said Samanowitz, a resident of Roslyn. “It’s a very worthy cause.”

Those wishing to participate in the fundraiser will pay a $20 entrance fee to the buffet, which will be catered by the Inn at Great Neck. Half of the proceeds will go to Friends of Karen, Samanowitz said.

The event will start at noon and go to 2 p.m., he said.

We Care will also be hosting a raffle for prizes donated by businesses in and out of Great Neck, Samanowitz said.

“A hundred percent of the profits from the raffle will go to Friends of Karen,” he said.

Samanowitz said he founded We Care in 1991 out of the desire to have the chamber help the civic interests of the area, as well as its businesses.

“I was on the board at the time and found out by looking at our charter that we were supposed to help out our residents,” he said. “I thought that it would be nice to start this organization to help out the residents.”

Samanowitz said that We Care has held fundraisers for several organizations since its inception and last year organized a job fair for local veterans.
