GN library employees not getting fair shake

The Island Now

It is painful to see the buttons worn by the staff members at Great Neck Library.

The staff are some of the most dedicated and helpful workers to be found anywhere. Their positive attitude has hidden the declining situation of their benefits and salaries.

I have spent increased hours at the library over the last several months and taken full advantage of all the library has to offer. But the thought that the board feels that huge dollars are best spent on architects and attorneys rather than their own employees and neighbors is beyond the realm of reason.

While the library does need to maintain a functional building, it certainly does not need a “state-of-the-art” environment to meet the needs of the community.

With employee retirement, there should have been employees hired, but yet the salaries have just been absorbed and the work distributed among remaining employees.

It’s sad that in a neighborhood like Great Neck which embraces so many different cultures, we are depriving our library staff a fair shake.
