New Jersey police officers arrested a 27-year-old Great Neck man last week for allegedly driving drunk on the shoulder of a road in rural Kinnelon Borough, N.J.

Alfred A. Childers, 27, of Great Neck was arrested at about 2 a.m. on Sunday, July 29 and charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to maintain lane, using a cellphone while driving and reckless driving, Kinnelon Borough Police Department Lt. John Schwartz said.

Kinnelon Borough patrolman Mark Ehrenburg initially stopped Childers for driving his black Audi with New York registration on the shoulder of Kinnelon Road, Schwartz said.

Upon questioning, Schwartz said Ehrenburg detected a strong scent of alcohol on Childers’ breath and noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy.

Schwarts said Childers then failed a field sobriety test and was placed under arrest. He was later released from police custody pending a court date, Schwartz said.
