GNPS television to broadcast Les Miz

The Island Now

Upcoming programs over Great Neck Public Schools Television will be the Les Miserables Concert to Benefit Long Beach and South High’s “La Bohème.”

Last March, North High School hosted a fundraising concert to benefit the Long Beach Public Schools Comprehensive Arts Department, which suffered huge losses as a result of Superstorm Sandy. The evening featured the glorious music and songs from “Les Misérables.” The combined chorus consisted of some 125 voices made up of North High’s Jazz Choir, the Long Beach High School Select Choir, and several North High alumni who performed in North’s production of “Les Misérables” the previous year.

Les Miz Concert to Benefit Long Beach viewing times are 10 a.m., and 2 and 6 p.m.

South High has been involved in performing operas for over 40 years, and it is one of the few non-specialized public high schools in the nation with an active opera program. Last April, South High performed Puccini’s classic, “La Bohème.”

Set in 1830s Paris, “La Bohème” is the tragic love story of Rodolfo, a struggling writer, and Mimí, a seamstress. There is also a love story between Rodolfo’s painter friend, Marcello, and Musetta. Rodolfo is fearful that he cannot take care of Mimí and sends her away unaware that she has tuberculosis. When she returns, it is to die in Rodolfo’s arms.

South High Opera: La Bohème view times are noon, and 4 and 9 p.m.
