Good citizenship calls for real involvement

The Island Now

Dear Mr. Freed,

I am not a shareholder; nor would I characterize my writing as a schmooze. I was driven to letter writing because, as a long-time resident, since 1956, I have been active in many aspects of community life, and am now interested in gun control, resistance to fracking, ten year active support for healthcare reform.

As a long time progressive, I simply could not sit by and read many largely vociferous and often misinformed writers on subjects of great importance to our country. I strongly believe that every voice counts and am distressed at the apathy of many citizens and that we get the government we deserve.

If we do not become seriously involved in problems that we care about, but just criticize without offering thoughtful solutions, we are doomed to suffer the results of not participating.

So let’s hear from you. I am sure the editors would be happy to publish interesting material, if submitted. In the meantime, we have the opportunity to fill the pages at no cost, sometimes with edification.
