GOP redistricting plan a threat to democracy

The Island Now

On this momentous day in United States history, when our government showed the world that democracy triumphs over terrorism, we have a group of people in Mineola bent on undermining and destroying our very democracy.

The Nassau County majority (Republicans) is planning to pass a gerrymandered redistricting map that would give them countless years of majority rule without the people of Nassau County having the opportunity to choose who they favor as the future majority party. The Republican Party plan to will fix future elections that will perpetuate their majority rule.

They obviously do not believe in their chances of succeeding in future elections, unless they fix who will vote before this November’s election.

We must oppose one-party rule without independent input into redistricting.

I call for an independent group that should negotiate any changes in district borders, made up of both Democrats and Republicans. An independent group that can give the people of Nassau a chance to make their own choice rather than have one party (Republicans) choose for them.
