A Great Neck doctor and his wife were charged Thursday for failing to file tax returns for three years in a row and owe the state more than $60,000, Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced.

Tom Hopkins, 51, and his wife Annahid Hopkins, 38, who is a pharmacist, appeared in Nassau County First District Court Thursday and were both charged with three counts of third-degree criminal tax fraud and one count of repeated failure to file personal income and earnings taxes.

“Medical professionals should know that a loss in taxpayer revenue can hurt public health and safety, but these defendants are now alleged to have cheated New York State out of more than $60,000 over the course of several years,” Singas said. “My office will continue to work with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance to ensure that public funds are protected and everybody pays their fair share.”

According to the DA’s office, the Hopkins face a maximum sentence of 1-1/3 to four years in prison.

Singas said a joint investigation with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance found that both Tom and Annahid did not file tax returns in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

She also said they owed $63,198 in taxes during those three years.

The couple’s combined income during those years, the DA’s office said, was $400,000, $350,000 and $125,000, respectively.

The DA’s office said Tom Hopkins surrendered to DA investigators on March 30 and Annahid Hopkins surrendered on April 1.

Assistant District Attorney Leemor Peled of the Singas’ Economic Crimes Bureau is prosecuting the case.

The Hopkins are due back in court on May 6.

Efforts to reach their attorney, Jonathan B. Manley, were unavailing.
