Great Neck history presentation

The Island Now

Great Neck history buffs will enjoy a presentation by the authors of a new book about the community, to be given at the Great Neck Library next Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Alice Kasten, president of the Great Neck Historical Society, and Leila Mattson, the former head reference librarian at the Great Neck Library, will talk about community history from the 1600s to 1950, show pictures of old time Great Neck, and answer audience questions at the program, to be held in the main library community room beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The book the pair teamed up to write, “Arcadia Images of America: Great Neck” grew out of their passion for local history and was published two months ago. The Arcadia series of publications features communities throughout the country.

The authors seemed perfect for the Great Neck edition, since both are local history enthusiasts. With Mattson’s resources as a reference librarian and Kasten’s enthusiasm for Great Neck history, the book was a natural project.

Many of the more than 50 pictures in the slide presentation to be shown during the program come from the book, which will be available for purchase. For further information about the program, e-mail Ms. Kasten at alicekasten@gmail.com.
