Great Neck tennis team takes title, again

The Island Now

The members of the Great Neck Men’s Senior Tennis Team, required to be over age 60 to qualify, but many on the team are over 70, have just added yet another championship to their exemplary record.  Congratulations to all the members of the team.

Holding on to first place at the start of the season, the team earned home court for the concluding three rounds of playoff matches.

Before the regular competition started in May, the games moved from the spacious Memorial Field tennis courts to the courts at Kings Point Park. All members of the Great Neck team had to submit documentation which verified their Great Neck residency.

The playoffs started on August 18 with a convincing win against the Garden City team, Casino.

For  the semifinal and final matches on Aug. 25 and Sept. 8, Great Neck had to contend against strong and experienced teams from the formidable Shelter Rock Tennis Club at Kings Point Park. Great Neck impressively held serve in both encounters with their Shelter Rock opponents: 10-3 and then 11-0 in the final championship match.

In the Senior Tennis League, Court No. 1 is 4 points, Court No. 2 is 3 points, and Courts No. 3 and No. 4 count for 2 points each. So in the final match Great Neck won all four courts without dropping a set for the entire team.

During this long season, the team would like to give special thanks to the Park District’s Manny Falzon and the entire staff of Kings Point Park for their patience and cooperation.
