Green outshines Red in Senior Division battle

The Island Now

It was a gorgeous spring day for soccer – the birds were singing, the trees and flowers were blooming.  The parents took chairs out of storage and socialized and watched the athletes play the game.  The TOP athletes also loved the beautiful day.  This is what soccer is about.  Everyone participated; we saw great games and impressive sportsmanship.  All had a good time.

Seniors

Green team 2     vs.   Red team  0. Even though the Green team won the game by two goals, it was a competitive, well-played game.  Green team’s goalie and the defense of Justin Almonte, Harrison Stein, Michael and Andrew Rail really held it together to stop the opposition from scoring.

Sebastian Garcia scored with an assist from his midfielder Frankie LaPinta, who joined us for the first time this season.  David Glass brought the ball downfield and with skillful dribbling, shot a beautiful ball in to the corner of the goal.  Mary Glass was instrumental on midfield and Charlie Hinz just missed putting in the third goal for the Green team.

The Red team had some great plays and nice passing between Matthew Saraiva and Andrea Matteo.  In his first appearance for the spring season too, Patrick Williams played tough defense for the Red team.  The Red team‘s Nickolas Mazariegos, Samantha Duggan, Tristan Yang really pushed the ball down field but it was one of those days that their strikes just didn’t go in.  Sebastian Gonzalez had a good game as the Red team’s goalie with some nice punts to Joe Caban and Billy Russo.  It was a fun game to watch and all the athletes gave their all.

Intermediates

Red Ninjas 1 vs.  Green Ninjas 2. The Intermediates played a more methodical game, maybe it was because of their team names.  Both teams took their time to bring the ball down the field, and passed it around to decide on the best shots before shooting at the goal.

The Red Ninjas welcomed newcomer Elijah Kim to the group who played very well.  Ashlyn Jurena scored with an assist from her sister Annaliese Jurena.

Mathew Lausev was superb in the goal for the Green Ninjas’ team as well as scoring for his team.  Also a striker, Chris Cooney added another goal for the Green Ninjas.  Josh Hom and John Bertuccio demonstrated their dribbling skills as midfielders for the Green Ninjas.  They deliberated about their passes and made sure they were accurate to their teammates.

As goalie for the Red team, Demitri Georgedakis had a powerful game, with Aaron Ma and Nicolas Krieger helping him out on defense.

Juniors

Orange Flames    7   vs.     Red Devils 7. The Orange Flames were on fire today, putting in numerous goals.  Captain David Cheung of the Orange Flames had a hat trick as well as Connor Fitzgerald who scored his 3 goals within 5 minutes of each other.   Lucas Mitacchione had a great goalie game and put another one in for the Orange Flames.  Demond Pearson had a well-played defensive game for the Orange Flames.

Answering back, Seamus McWeeney tore up the field and scored two goals for the Red Devils.  Captain of the Red Devils, Brandon Cisneros, put in two goals of his own.  Brian Cisneros scored for the Red team and played excellent defense.  And Desmond O’Callaghan, as the Red Devils midfielder, played skillfully both defensively and offensively with two goals scored for the team.

It was a high scoring game for the Juniors.  It was an enthusiastic and well-played match by both the Orange Flames and the Red Devils.
