Happy as a clam for seafood fest

Seafood and music lovers from the tristate area will have their vices satiated at the Long Island Maritime Museum’s annual Seafood Festival in West Sayville, a two-day event to be held Saturday, Aug. 23 and Sunday, Aug. 24.

The yearly event celebrates the region’s famous oysters, clams and seafood traditions and brings together locals and visitors alike for a weekend full of hometown flavor and big time fun.

The museum grounds, overlooking the beautiful Great South Bay, will become a walking village that offers something for everyone:  Local cuisine, live music, arts and crafts, children’s activities, pirate shows, educational exhibits and more.  “The Seafood Festival has really evolved from a small, local affair into one of our area’s premier events, drawing thousands of people from all over the east coast to the museum,” said Kathleen Prokesch, the museum’s special event director. “As a not-for-profit organization, the museum relies on fundraisers to support its mission of preserving Long Island’s rich maritime heritage for educational purposes.  It’s wonderful to share the museum with so many over the course of a weekend for such a great cause”

The festival, made possible via the support of many sponsors including Blue Island Oyster Company, Claws Seafood Market and Chicken of the Sea, will celebrate its 23rd anniversary this year.

While the main attraction is the largest variety of fresh, local seafood to be found on the South Shore, the other draw is the event’s Main Stage, which will include a diverse array of fantastic live music from New York’s top rock, pop and country bands.

Admission is $8 per person and is free for children ages 5 and under

The museum is located at 88 West Avenue in West Sayville and the festival hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both days. Other than handicap access, parking is not available on sight. Free parking and shuttle bus service will be provided from the Baymen Soccer Field located at Cherry Avenue and Tarriff Street in West Sayville.
