The Town of North Hempstead has received $847,000 in federal funding for the repairs of damage to Harbor Hills Park in Great Neck damaged by flooding and winds during Superstorm Sandy.

Acquired through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the grant would finance construction to restore the seawall structure, asphalt parking lot, playground area, dock and pier, facility building and clay tennis courts.

“This FEMA funding will help us restore Harbor Hills Park to its pre-Superstorm Sandy splendor,” North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said.

Suzy Schechtman, president of the Harbor Hills Civic Association, said, “The Harbor Hills community appreciates the town moving forward with capturing FEMA funds which will enable us to repair the damage done to our park by Superstorm Sandy. We are grateful that the Town was able to work successfully with federal representatives to make this happen.”

Officials said there is not yet a timetable for construction, as the Department of Environmental Conservation has yet to approve the project.

North Hempstead has received more than $40 million from FEMA for 32 projects related to Superstorm Sandy cleanup, town officails said. Two projects are still pending approval.
