Harvard names Keough ‘distinguished teacher’

The Island Now

Terese Keogh of Manhasset High School was named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2013” by the Harvard Club of Long Island.

The “Distinguished Teacher Award” recognizes people who transform the future.

“Dedicated teachers like Mrs. Keogh expend unfathomable amounts of time and energy on our Long Island teens, day after day and year after year,” said Judith Esterquest, a board member of the Long Island Harvard Club. “Their efforts inspire students to dream dreams, to work to accomplish those dreams, and to think rigorously about what they want their future to be.”

Keogh, who has her undergraduate degree from New York University, has spent the last 13 of her 30-year teaching career at Manhasset.  She teaches AP physics, Regents physics and has even taught 8th grade physical science.

She is also currently teaching the grade six science enrichment program after school at Munsey Park and Shelter Rock Schools.

In addition to coaching the Manhasset Physics Olympics team and volunteering her time to assist with the Science Olympiad Teams, Keogh spends many additional hours with, and on behalf of, Manhasset students. She has written over 2,000 recommendations for her students throughout her career, supporting applications to colleges, summer programs and for scholarship money. It is not unusual for her to write as many as 200 letters in a single year.

“We here in Manhasset have always known that Terese Keogh is truly a ‘Distinguished Teacher,’  said Manhasset district coordinator for science Theresa Curry.” How wonderful that Harvard has also recognized her for her wonderful contributions to her students, to Manhasset, and to science education.  Congratulations!”
