Herricks fund awards two new scholarships

The Island Now

The Herricks Community Fund has announced that the Fund will establish two new $1000 scholarships for graduating Herricks seniors, in addition to the two $1000.00 scholarships put in place last year.

The 2012 awards went to Herricks graduating seniors, Paige Barnaby and John McGuire, who demonstrated community service coupled with an anti-bulling awareness. The two additional awards will be given to graduating seniors who have demonstrated a committed involvement   in the performing arts. For details, the interested seniors should contact the High school Guidance Department.

The Herricks Community Fund is able to provide for these awards and other sponsored programs as a result of community support. Recently the Fund held its Annual Dinner Dance. This event was supported by many local businesses and residents. Ridgewood Saving Bank, a major supporter of the Herricks Community Fund, sponsored our music.

Our own Steve Griffin, RPM DJ’s kept the event moving as attendees enjoyed the dance floor. Valley National Bank sponsored a Grand prize. This event raised sufficient revenue to allow the Herricks Community Fund to continue its support for the Mini Grant Program.

Our annual carnival allows the Fund to maintain and operate both Youth Council programs, Coya at the High School and Friday Night Rec at the middle school. This event will be held on May30, May31, June1, and June2.  For all those who wish to attend this affair should purchase vouchers for wrist bracelets (which allows an individual. a full day of rides at the carnival) during the advanced sale program.

This year’s prices remained unchanged. Bracelets purchased prior to the event at the Community Center during the “presale” will pay $20 per bracelet while those purchased after the carnival begins will be paying $30 for the same bracelet. The HCF only receives funds from the presale. Once the event is underway the Herricks Community Fund receives no additional revenue. Buy early! Save $10.00 per voucher and in the process contribute to the Herricks Community Fund.

Our Community Players are currently in rehearsal for this years spring show Mame. The dates and times are as follows:May 4, 5, 10, 11,17,18,19   Friday & Sat 8 p.m., Sunday 3 p.m,.  Prices: Adults: $23 Senior/Child: $18 Groups of 10+: $15.

Their productions are quite professional and compete with Broadway shows at a much lower cost. Profits from this event will be used to fund the two new scholarships. For ticket information/carnival information please contact the HCF 516-742-1926.

In order to continue to provide for these important Herricks program we must continue to receive financial support from the community. Along these lines, for the first time in its history the HCF will be sending out requests for donations throughout the Herricks Community. We ask all to respond to this mailing so that we can expand our contributions to the school district. On behalf of the Herricks Community Fund, Co-Presidents Iona Davis and Paul Ehrbar thank all those who have and continue to support this fine organization
