Herricks hoopsters sustain first loss

The Herricks Highlanders varsity boys basketball team took a tough 55-38 loss against the Hicksville Comets on their home court Monday evening.  

Coming on the heels of their 49-44 victory over East Meadow in the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament finals on Friday, Dec. 7, the Highlanders now stand 2-1 overall and third in the Nassau Conference AA-III.

The Comets led Herricks 14-10 in the first quarter. Hicksville had their best quarter in the second with 19 points over the Highlander’s 11 points. 

At 33-21 starting the second half, Herricks took control with their best quarter in the third, scoring 11 points over Hicksville’s six points. But the Comets put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points to the Highlander’s six.

Herricks point-guard Andrew Fellus scored a team-high 17 points, including two three-pointers, after scoring 23 points against East Meadow and earning MVP honors for the tournament.  

T.J. Dannas of the Comets scored a team-high 21 points and six rebounds. rNick Petrucelli and Ryan Mannix scored 10 points each.  The Comets now stand 1-1 overall.

“We played very hard,” Highlanders head coach Tom Kinsella said.  “Hicksville is a good team, and we just have to get better.”

The Coaches vs. Cancer tournament was held for its 14th year, with Herricks, Westbury, New Hyde Park and East Meadow participating.  

A total of $3,500 was raised between all four schools for cancer reacher at the American Cancer Society. Fellus was named tournament MVP and point guard Sam Aziz was an All Tournament Selection.

“I think our team shows a great deal of promise,” Herricks High School Athletic Director Jim Petricca said.  “We lost a lot of seniors last year, so the challenge is upon us.”
