The Island Now

The students of Hillside Grade School participated in their second annual Spelling Bee on Monday, June 17. Two representatives from each class stood onstage spelled as best they could. They managed to spell “barbecue,” “chocolate,” “anxiety,” and “jovial” for an audience made up of parents, teachers, and students. The winners were: first-grader Nayana Chetram, second-grader Sahara John, third-grader Lance Ng, fourth-grader Adithya Krishnan, fifth-grader Alaina Alias, and a tie shared by sixth-graders Prachi Shah and Noel Paul.

Principal Karen Olynk selected the words for the contest, while L. Fretto, M. Cullen, B. Nelson, Mrs. Polito, Mrs. O’Connor, and J. Bayer were judges. M. Bruschi photographed the event. Parents distributed ribbons and medals to all the spellers while the first place winners won gold trophies.
