“Career Connections”. program (formerly “The Job Club”) will be held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone in the job market is welcome to attend to get information on resume writing, updating job skills, unemployment issues and job opportunities. Register for the program at the Hillside Public Library, located at 155 Lakeville Road in New Hyde Park or by phone at (516) 355-7850, ext. 301 or 304. 

 

 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.  The VITA Program offers free tax help at the Hillside Public Library to low- to moderate-income (generally, $49,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns and assistance with programs such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled on Saturdays, Feb. 19, 26, Mar. 5, 19, 26, and Apr. 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Call to schedule an appointment. Bring a copy of last year’s tax return to your appointment, as well as any other papers necessary to complete your return. 

Free AArp Tax aid. for low income seniors. AARP-trained volunteers will prepare 2010 tax returns for low income seniors at the Hillside Public Library on Mondays Feb. 14 and 28, Mar. 7, 14, 21, 28, and Apr. 4 and 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please call to schedule an appointment for 10 or 11:00 a.m.; 12 or 1:00 p.m. Bring a copy of last year’s tax return to your appointment, as well as any other information needed to complete your return.

improve your english skills. Literacy nassau and the Hillside Public Library will offer free conversational English workshops at day and evening classes every week on Mondays, 6:45 p.m., Tuesdays, 12:30 p.m., and Fridays, at 11:30 a.m. Choose the class you wish to attend and be prepared to make a commitment of at least 8 classes to fulfill New York state requirements. To register, call literary at Nassau at (516) 867-3580, ext. 21 and speak to a counselor who will register you. Literacy Nassau will notifiy the library when you are registered. 

Free Blood Pressure Screenings. A registered nurse will conduct screenings on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Feb. 12, Mar. 12, Apr. 9, May. 14, and June 11, at the Hillside Library. No Appointments necessary. 

Senator Martins. will hold open office hours at the library on Thursday, apr. 7, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. All constituents are invited to meet Sen. Martins and speak with him about any of local or state concerns they might have. Registration for AARp safe driving course. Registration begins on Monday, Feb. 28, at 10:15 a.m. Classes begin Saturday, March 12, 9:30 a.m. Bring your driver’s license, check or MO for $12 (AARP members) pr $14 (non-members) and AARP membership card if you have one.  You must have a check or MO with you to register for the class.

play along adventures. Ages 18 – 36 months on either Wednesdays or Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. Bring your little ones for a fun hour of stories, songs and play time. The dates are: Wednesdays, March 16  and 23 Thursdays, March 24th and 31st. Registration begins on March 9th. 

Registration open for Lecture. “How the internet changed the media: Why newspapers, Music and Television will never be the same. Registration begins  Thursday, March 3, at 10 a.m. Event starts on Thursday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m., presented by Brian Rose, professor in Fordham University’s Dept. of Commiunications and Media Studies

Chairs Presntation. The Hillside Public Library is currently hosting a presentation of chairs made by the 8th grade Art Class of Mrs. Carol Burnett of Notre Dame School.  Each chair depicts an artist and is made to showcase an interpretation of his/her particular style.  Alongside each chair, the library has placed books matching the artist, displayed so that patrons may have insight into the artist’s life. We feel this will add depth to understanding the artist’s work.  We thank Mrs. Carol Burnett and her students for sharing with us, and we encourage all our residents to come in and observe this creative exhibit.

Registration opens for Thai chi. classes begins on March 7, at 10:00 a.m. instructor Kathy Waszmer teaches on Mar. 28, Apr. 4, 11, 18; 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.; fee, $12 for 4 classes.

i can read it, i can make it. Ages: K & 1st. Themed stories and crafts. Registration begins on March 9 and the Sessions’ dates are: Wednesdays, March 16, 23, 30 and April 6 and 13 at 5:15 p.m.

story time explorers. Ages 4-5 Registration begins on March 8 and the Sessions’ dates are Wednesdays, March 16 and 23; April 6, 13, 20 at 1:30 p.m.

tales for tykes. Ages 3-4. Stories and crafts. Registration begins on March 8th and the Sessions’ dates are:  Tuesdays, March 15, 22, 29; April 5 and 12 at 11:00 a.m.
