Houses of worship to honor King’s ‘dream’

They have a dream.

Four houses of worship along the North Shore – Temple Sinai of Roslyn Heights, the Friendship Baptist Church of Roslyn, the Islamic Center of Long Island in Westbury and St. Aidan’s Catholic Church in Williston Park – seek to join together Christians and Jews, Muslims and Buddhists and every religious group in between in the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famed “I have a dream” speech.

The congregations plan to unite next Sunday at Temple Sinai to honor King’s legacy – typically recognized annually on the third Monday in January – in a celebration entitled, “We are the World: A Celebration of Song, Music and Culture.”

“We are thrilled to be hosting this wonderful event,” said Rabbi Andrew Gordon, of Temple Sinai. “Our society has grappled with the recent deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. We hope that this event will bridge the differences between our faiths and ethnicities and will provide a place where we can begin to discuss the important issues of justice, equality and commonality.”

The event is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and is free to people of all ages.

A welcoming prayer will mark the start of the festivities, which will then be followed by reflections and songs from the group and individually from each congregation. Refreshments will also be provided.

Temple Sinai will also be collecting donations of hats, gloves, scarves and toiletries for a local family shelter.

Food will also be collected to benefit the E. Joy Food Pantry in Roslyn Heights.
