Hurricanes sweep twin bill

The Island Now

The New Hyde Park girls 12U softball team swept a doubleheader from the Long Island Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon in Medford, both victories come from behind ending with a walk-off hit in game two.

NHP went into the bottom of the seventh down 8-7. Emma Nidermaier got the rally started by beating out a perfectly placed bunt. Speed kills in girls softball and with Sophia Jacoby coming up, NHP had speed at first and at the plate.

On the next pitch, with Nidermaier stealing, Jacoby laid down a bunt, beat it out and Nidermaier went all the way to third on the play. Jacoby wisely went to second on the play.

When the dust settled NHP had the winning run on second. Melissa Ward came up and scorched one up the middle, the second basemen made a nice play, fired home but Nidermaier was too quick, sliding home to beat the throw and tie the game.

Maggie Donnelly stepped in and drilled one to right for the walk off single for NHP.

Dani Giordano pitched a complete game for the win.

Nidermaier and Jacoby played terrific at short and second with five assists each in the game.

In game one, Ward dominated on the mound with a complete game 11 strikeout performance. Gabby Morales scorched two doubles and scored twice.

Felisa Bronzino singled in a run and scored in a nine-run sixth inning that put NHP up 9-4.

Ward led off the inning with a single and finished the inning with an RBI double. Donnelly doubled in two runs and caught both games of the doubleheader. Nicole Kuzler had two singles and two walks in the game. Maddie Alamandy walked and scored in the big inning.
