In Mineola and E. Williston elections, one candidate per race

Five words are sufficient to sum up the ticket for March elections in East Williston and Mineola: six candidates for six positions.

Only six candidates – five incumbents and one newcomer – filed petitions to appear on the ballot, the village clerks said. The deadline to submit petitions was Tuesday evening.

With three open positions in both East Williston and Mineola, the elections will decide the majority of each village’s five-member board of trustees, which acts as its governing body. The mayor for each village is also up for election.

In East Williston, Mayor David Tanner and Trustee Bonnie Parente, the deputy mayor, are both running for re-election in a joint campaign.

James Iannone is running unopposed for the second open trustee position after Trustee Caroline DeBenedittis decided not to seek re-election.

In Mineola, Mayor Scott Strauss and Trustees George Durham and Dennis Walsh, all members of the New Line Party, are running unopposed.

In a previous interview with the Williston Times, Durham said the Mineola board of trustees have a long history together and make an effective team.

“I’ve lived here my whole life,” he said. “I went to school here. I’ve known the mayor since I was five years old. We want to do what’s right for the residents.”

The village elections will take place Wednesday, March 18.
