The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County presented “Women, Not Victims: Moving Beyond Sexualized Atrocities During Genocide,” on Sunday, March 13, at Nassau Community College.

The event was a global examination of sexualized atrocities during and after the Holocaust and other genocides, as a way to shatter the silence on sexualized atrocities and give voice to the victims and Survivors. Vepuka Kauari, a native of Namibia, who co-founded the Association of the Ovaherero Genocide in the USA, wore traditional Herero clothing, as she spoke about “Consequences of the 1904 Colonial Genocide on Herero Women in Namibia. Kauari’s great-grandmother survived the 1904 Herero genocide.

The 1904 Herero genocide will be the subject of a program, “From Southwest Africa to Auschwitz; Forgotten Genocide of the Herero and Nama, from 1904 to Today,” at HMTC,  on Sunday, May 22, which Kauari will take part in.
