The Village of Kings Point took the next step Wendesday in its plan to install a surveillance network to monitor the 19 entrances into the village with cameras.

The board of trusteess announced at its regularly scheduled meeting that the village will issue a request for proposals for a consultant assist in the completion of a village-wide CCTV Video Surveillance System.

In the next phase of the project, analog day/night cameras will be added that are, equipped with license plate recognition capabilities.

Village of Kings Point Mayor Michael Kalnick has said in the past that the tracking program is necessary to protect residents, despite concerns from civil rights groups.

“Crime will always be out there,” Kalnick said. “Do you wait for it to happen? I think no.”

Currently, the surveillance system consists of cameras at the intersections of East Shore Road and Hicks Lane, Lower East Shore Road (North of Ravine), and Baker Hill Road and Station Road.

“The balance of the project consists of five main sites and 18 sub sites – those sites are located throughout the Village to prevent vehicle entry into the Village without being observed or recorded,” according to the village’s proposal document.

Also included in the surveillance system is a Vigilant ALPR system, which incorporates a “hot list” of information provided by National Crime Information Center and the New York Statewide Police Information Network).  Examples of data are stole license plates, wanted persons, violent gang and terrorists, and sexual offender files.

The guidance and assistance provided sought by the consultant is divided into two phases: preparation of bid documents for labor, material and work necessary to complete the system and overseeing the construction, installation. The proposal also calls for the consultant to oversee the initial set-up of the remainder of the system to assure it is working properly and any other work that may be required to complete the project.

The deadline for proposals is Friday, Sept. 28 at 12 p.m.

Copies of request for proposals can be picked up at the office of the Village Clerk: 32 Steppingstone Lane, Kings Point, or downloaded from the village website at www.villageofkingspoint.org.
