Lady Panthers unseat Post for No. 1

The Island Now

The Adelphi University women’s lacrosse team overtook cross-island rival, LIU-Post in both the IWLCA and Lacrosse Magazine polls this week to reclaim the No. 1 spot in the nation.

The Panthers (16-0, 12-0 NE-10) garnered the regular-season title and top seed in the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship after going unbeaten in its 17 contests, including all 12 league games.

This is the Panthers third NE-10 regular season crown in the past five years.

The last time the Adelphi women’s team were ranked No. 1 in the nation by the IWLCA coaches was Feb. 27, 2012. They edged out LIU-Post for the top spot this week in the IWLCA poll by just two points, and received 15 more first place votes then the Pioneers.

Adelphi also moved ahead of LIU-Post in the Lacrosse Magazine poll, moving from No. 2 to No. 1.

The Panthers concluded the regular season last weekend with a 15-7 victory over Bentley. Adelphi will host the NE-10 Final Four this weekend in Garden City, taking on the winner of a quarterfinal match-up between Stonehill and LeMoyne on Saturday, having earned a first-round bye.

The University of New Haven (15-2, 11-1 NE-10) received the No. 2 seed after a stellar regular-season campaign and advance into Saturday’s semifinals at Adelphi.

The championship contest at Adelphi will be broadcast online at no cost at northeast10.tv
