Lake Success office sends layoff warnings

A Lake Success company may have to lay off 10 percent of its staff if contracts with the federal and state governments are not renewed in 90 days, a spokesman said on Monday.

IPRO, a health-care service provider with offices in Lake Success and Albany, said in a statement that the company was required to hand out layoff warnings to several of its employees while negotiating with the federal and state government.

“IPRO has a number of major government contracts that are currently up for renewal through competitive bidding and is thus obliged to make these notifications,” an IPRO spokesman said.

But the company said it is confident that they will be able to retain the jobs and renew its contracts.

“IPRO has issued a number of such notifications in the past,” the spokesman said. “The organization is confident in its ability to retain key government contracts but recognizes its obligation to submit WARN notifications under New York State law.”

A private company with more than 50 employees is required to issue “timely WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) notices before a potential layoff,” the spokesman said.

WARN notices must be handed to employees 90 days before a possible layoff, according to state law.

The spokesman defined the contracts being negotiated with state and federal governments as “healthcare quality improvement and evaluation contracts.”

Most of the company’s 400 employees are located in the Lake Success office, according to published reports.

IPRO has reportedly obtained 13 contracts with the state between 2006 to 2014, totalling more than $200 million.
