Law enforcement unions back Martins

Several labor organizations representing Nassau County law enforcement officers and emergency service workers on Wednesday endorsed state Sen. Jack Martins (R-Mineola) in his campaign against Democratic challenger Adam Haber for re-election to represent the 7th State Senate District.

At a news conference at Nassau County Police Benevolence Association headquarters in Mineola, Martins accepted the support of the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association, Superior Officers Association, Detective Association Inc., Nassau County Sheriffs, Nassau Police Conference, Police Conference of New York, Civil Service Employees Association and the Nassau County Fire Marshals Benevolence Association.

Martins said it was “a privilege and honor to accept” the endorsements, saying, “These are the people who provide the quality of life we have in Nassau County.”

Nassau County Police Benevolent Association President James Carver said the organizations were endorsing Martins because “his record is consistent with the tools we need to protect the residents of Nassau County,” citing their support of legislation Martins has spearheaded to combat heroin and prescription drug abuse on Long Island.

Carver said the endorsements represented the labor organizations’ support for the GOP to retain control of the state Senate in November.

The 7th State Senate District includes Mineola, Roslyn, Westbury, New Hyde Park, Williston Park, Garden City Park, Manhasset, Great Neck, Port Washington and parts of Floral Park, Franklin Square, Elmont, Valley Stream, Carle Place and Hicksville.

Martins last week was endorsed by the state Police Benevolent Association, which represents officers within the State University of New York system, the New York State Environmental Conservation Police, the New York State Park Police and the New York State Forest Rangers.
