Levings running for Belgrave post

Incumbent Commissioner Brian Levings will stand uncontested for another term in the Belgrave Water Pollution Control District’s election on Dec. 11.

Levings, who is running for his fifth term in office, said he learned the ins and outs of sewage management on the job over the last 12 years.

“All my professionalism comes from working down at Belgrave with my men,” he said.

Though the district’s plant lost power after Hurricane Sandy, Levings said the district’s new generator sustained operations without issue and the plant sustained very little damage.

“We responded very nicely to it,” Levings said. “When we have an emergency like that, we take all the electric motors out of the system until the storm passes by and then we reinstall them again.”

The district recently upgraded its filters and replaced its chlorination system with ultraviolet disinfection, putting it in full compliance with state Department of Environmental Conservation requirements, according to Levings.

“[The UV system] cuts our nitrogen discharge up into the bay… to the limits set by the state,” he said.

And assuming there are no surprises in the uncontested vote, Levings said he will oversee the installation of a new outflow pipe and efforts to make the plant more energy efficient by possibly using solar power, fuel cells, wind-generated electricity or natural gas instead of oil for power generation.

The polls will be open between 3 p.m. and 9: p.m at the Company 4 Firehouse on the corner of Northern Boulevard and Jayson Avenue.

All district residents qualified to vote in Town of North Hempstead elections are eligible to cast ballots.

The district administrates sewage services for University Gardens, Russel Gardens, western parts of Great Neck Plaza between Great Neck Road and Cuttermill Road and the unincorporated areas on the peninsula.
