LIRR announces expanded train service

The Island Now

The LIRR will be restoring half-hourly weekend train service between Port Washington and Penn Station starting Saturday, Nov. 16.

The revised weekend service will feature an additional 32 trains on Saturdays and Sundays, bringing the Port Washington Branch back to the level of service it enjoyed before September 2010, when service during off-peak hours and on weekends was reduced as part of larger MTA initiative to close a $900 million budget gap. The restoration of 30-minute service on weekdays was accomplished in May 2012.

The LIRR is also adding trains to its weekday schedule for the Main Line/Ronkonkoma Branch:

Eastbound: 4:09 p.m. eastbound train from Penn Station and arriving at Farmingdale at 5:04 p.m. This train will help relieve crowded Ronkonkoma and Huntington trains, as it will be making stops at Woodside, Jamaica, Mineola, Westbury, Hicksville, Bethpage and Farmingdale.

5:01 p.m. eastbound train from Penn Station will have an added stop at Hicksville.

8:22 p.m. eastbound train from Penn Station and arriving at Hicksville at 9:11 p.m. This new train will close a 48-minute gap in service to local stations between New Hyde Park and Hicksville and help relieve overcrowding on the trains that bookend this service. The new train will make stops at Woodside, Jamaica, New Hyde Park, Merillon Avenue, Mineola, Carle Place, Westbury and Hicksville.

Westbound: 7 p.m. westbound train from Farmingdale arriving at Penn Station at 7:56 p.m. This new train will make stops at Farmingdale, Bethpage, Hicksville, Mineola, Jamaica, Woodside and Penn Station.
