LI’s best to battle for Cangero Cup

The Island Now

The Long Island Soccer Football League announced that the 2013 Cangero Cup will be held on Friday, June 28 at 8:30 p.m. at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, NY. The LISFL Division 1 League winner Port Jefferson SC will face-off with the LISFL Division 1 McKim Cup winner (either O.B. Fenerbahce or N.Y. Polet) to determine the best amateur soccer team on Long Island.

The Cangero Cup is named after Anthony Cangero, who was a giant in the game of soccer in New York. Cangero was inducted into the Eastern New York State Amateur Soccer Association Hall of Fame in 2000 and sat as President of the LISFL for over 12 years from 1992-2004 before he lost a tragic battle with cancer. One of his lasting legacies was the creation of the Super Cup, which debuted at the old Mitchel Field Stadium in 1996 and was won by Queens-based New York Irish Rovers, which played Mineola Alheirense SC in the inaugural match.

“Anthony was a dear friend of mine, and I know he is smiling today” said fellow ENYSSA and USASA Hall of Famer and current LISFL President Gus Xikis. “This game is a showcase of the best amateur soccer that Long Island has to offer and in recognition of a great man in our sport. It is only fitting that it should be played at Mitchel Field, which is a world-class facility here on Long Island in Nassau County.”  Admission is free.
