LIU students sing, help raise money

The Island Now

Students of LIU Post, both currently enrolled and alumni, took the stage at Church of Our Saviour, Lutheran in Manhasset for the first ever to perform Eine Kleine Nacht Musik.

A fundraiser to both support the church and help fund the tour to Switzerland for the Long Island Sound Vocal Jazz, attendees were given a night of music of the classical and Broadway variety.

Sophomore Veronica Nyugen started the show with Cherubino’s aria “Voi Che Sapete” from “Le Nozze De Figaro” or “The Marriage of Figaro.”

Following this, freshman Rebecca Engel stunned the audience with a rendition of Claude Debussy’s “Nuit d’toiles.”

Alumni Jennifer Geissman brought back the Mozart with another aria from Mozart’s “Le Nozze De Figaro” entitled “Porgi Amor.” Another alumni and the host for the event, Max Vitagliano, followed, with a piece from Guiseppe Verdi’s “Rigoletto” called “La Donna e Mobile” a staple of the tenor repertoire.

Lastly, the classical half was ended on a high note as junior Shannon Davenport took the stage singing Beethoven’s “Ich liebe dich” followed by guest performers Amy Kempton and Dr. Jim Shepherd performing Antonio Dvorak’s “Humoresque.”

After a brief intermission, the students took the stage once more to share some of their favorite Broadway tunes with the audience.

Jennifer Geissman started off this half with a rendition of “Whatever Happened to My Part” from “Spamalot” followed by Shannon Davenport’s cover of “If I Loved You” from “Carousel.”

The host threw his hat back in the ring to tell a story of a marvelous new world through the eyes of Jack from “Jack In the Beanstalk” in “Giants in the Sky” from “Into the Woods.”

To conclude this night of music, Jennifer Geissman demonstrated her amazing acting talents in a touching rendition of “I’m Not That Girl” from “Wicked” and Max Vitagliano came on for one more number, singing “I Am What I Am” from “La Cage Aux Folles.”
