Manhasset Girl scouts answer Legion’s call

The Island Now

The Manhasset Girl Scout Association began its year with an ice skating event that included a community service project.

In keeping with their tradition of doing a good deed in everything they do, each girl was asked to bring comfort items for U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.  They were responding to a request for support from Manhasset’s American Legion Auxiliary Unit 304.

Despite the drawdown efforts, several Platoons have recently been deployed to Afghanistan from Fort Drum, N.Y.

Auxiliary Unit 304 “adopted” the 3-71 of the 10th Mountain Division, a group of approximately 150 brave men and women. They arrived in Afghanistan in late September/early October.

Following their ice skating event the Girl Scouts came to the American Legion Hall “armed” with bags and boxes filled with candy, gum, baby wipes, and water bottle mixes.

They donated chap sticks, travel size toiletries, wisps (the waterless toothbrush/toothpaste) and shaving equipment.  But the homemade cards with the sincere wishes of gratitude and pride for the work our soldiers are doing will probably be the most cherished items.  More and more what is communicated from our troops is gratitude that they are not forgotten, gratitude that someone at home remembers they are not at home.
