Manhasset students score at INTEL fair

Ten Manhasset science research students won awards at the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair earlier this month, with three taking home the first-place Sigma Xi prize worth $1,000.

Austin Te, Kimberly Te and Jinyu Wu won the top prize in the week-long competition, which took place from May 11-16 in Los Angeles, Calif., while several others won for projects in the biochemistry, environmental management, microbiology and energy and transportation categories.

More than 1,800 of the top science research students from 70 countries competed for $5 million in prizes and scholarships awarded during the annual fair, officials said.

Andrew Moshova and Jessica Kim won first place in energy and transportation, which included the American Statistical Association Award, Stephanie Ying won second place for microbiology and Emma Dong, Caitlin McCormick and Grace Lee placed third for environmental management.

Austin Te, Kimberly Te and Jinyu Wu rounded out Manhasset’s wins with fourth-place finishes in biochemistry.
