Manorhaven Elementary School in Port Washington celebrated Earth Day on April 22 by performing a play to address global warming.

The Earth Day themed play was scripted by the Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington.

The entire project was funded by Angela & Scott Jaggar Foundation Inc., an organization, located at 50 West Creek Farms Road in Sands Point, that donates and supports nonprofit organizations in town and throughout Long Island. The Angela & Scott Jaggar Foundation Inc. sponsored the program under a general grant to Residents’ for the entire Get Your Green On/Port Washington Public School environmental education program.

Residents Executive Director Mindy Germain said Residents’ also teamed up with Cool the Earth, a national organization that uses an optimistic approach to address climate change through simple actions to reduce CO2, according to the Cool the Earth website.

“We partnered with an organization called cooltheearth.org to that lent us a basic script that we modified to go with our program,” Germain said. “It was tremendously successful.”

The Manorhaven faculty and Residents’ Green Team Leaders portrayed characters such as Mama Polar Bear, Koda her cub, Earth, and Mother Nature.

“The story was about a Mother Polar Bear and her Baby Polar Bear looking for their ice home that melted because of the evil scoundrel Mr. Carbon,” Germain said. “Mother Nature introduces Get Your Green On Pledges that will remove evil carbon. After the play, every student went home with a Get Your Green On Cool The Earth pledge book with six pledges. Each student that brings one pledge back to school next week will receive a Free Get Your Green On Reusable Water Bottle and become Green Team Leaders for their school moving forward.”

Germain said Residents’ have worked on several projects with the students this year including, the ‘Trash Talkin Exhibit at Bay Walk,’ which shows the life cycle of litter and Get Your Green On Signage Campaign, an oversized signage campaign around school that promotes conservation, recycling, waste reduction with dynamic images and statistics.

“This year we decided to focus on Bringing the Get Your Green On Signage to life with an assembly that provided the Umbrella, what is Global Warming, why is it happening and what can we do to stop it?” Germain said.

At the end of the assembly, students were given “Get Your Green On!” reusable water bottles and a pledge book with coupons.

“Thanks to Residents For a More Beautiful Port Washington for presenting this amazingly educational and fun program, as well [Manorhaven Elementary School] principal [Bonni] Cohen, the faculty and other staff, student green team leaders and all of the students who made this morning’s assembly so special,” Greco Integrated Communications CEO Debbie Greco said.
