Mariners close season with Senior Day win

The USMMA tennis team closed out the 2014 campaign with a 5-4 victory over Pratt on Senior Day.  Before the match, the Mariners honored its three graduating players: Tanner Nestler, Gabriel Castillo and Derek Acuna. The win gave USMMA its fifth triumph of the 2014 season, finishing with three more wins than last year.

James Hicks completed his stellar freshman season with a 6-1, 6-3 rout of John Imamoglu at No. 1 singles.  Hicks finishes the year with a team best 9-3 record at singles.  Geri Villan secured her point at No. 3 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over the Cannoners’ Fan Mo.  Villan rounds out the year with a 6-5 mark at No. 3 singles as she took on male competition all season.

The match would ultimately come down to a three-set battle at No. 4 singles.  Karl Sasse took the first set against Eli Eskenazi, 6-2, before dropping the second set, 6-3.  

The freshman would make it a happy Senior Day by dominating the third set, 6-1, and nailing down the 5-4 victory for USMMA (5-7).  

Sasse finished his rookie season with an 8-4 record at No. 4 singles.   

Errors Cost USMMA

The USMMA baseball team committed five errors Sunday afternoon in an 8-2 loss in the rubber game of a three-game series against Catholic. Andrew MacKinnon  and Cameron Stadele were both 2-of-4 with one RBI at the plate.  Robin Mowatt tossed eight innings for the home team and allowed just two earns, neither of which were earned.

The team split a Friday afternoon double header at Catholic. Warren Hartmann finished the day 5-of-6 at the plate while Cameron Stadele  launched a key three-run homer in game two of the twin bill.  Patrick Morgan pitched five innings in the second game to earn the win on the mound. 

Men’s LAX Playoff Hopes End

The USMMA men’s lacrosse team scored six times in the fourth quarter but it was not enough to overcome an early deficit as the Drew Rangers knocked-off the Mariners, 12-7, Saturday afternoon.  The defeat eliminates USMMA from playoff contention after competing in the Landmark Conference championship game last season.  Phil Walker paced the team with four goals while East Meadow’s Chris Whitenack won 12-of-20 at the face-off “X”. 

Mariners Host Invitational

The USMMA track & field teams hosted the 2014 Coach Omeltchenko Invitational Saturday afternoon at Brooks Stadium.  The USMMA 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams both took first-place as did Tyler Washington in the triple jump.  Mark Shelley also moved to second in the conference standings with a 3.81 meter leap in the pole vault.  Carle Place resident Mary Zehnder took second in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:11.13 while Elizabeth Simmons placed third in the javelin with a mark of 24.21 meters.

Mariani Nets Hat Trick in loss

Grace Mariani netted a hat trick Saturday afternoon but the USMMA women’s lacrosse team dropped a 20-5 decision at Susquehanna.  Emma Ehler led the Crusaders with seven points on the day, including six assists.  Elizabeth Noonan played her first collegiate game in goal and made 15 saves for the Mariners.
