In three decades of service to the Village of Great Neck Department of Public Works, Superintendent Louis Massaro has tackled a lot. He has worked under eight mayors, handling everything from sanitation to storm clean-up. On Tuesday the Board of Trustees honored with Massaro a plaque for his 30 years of service.

Massaro is a Great Neck native with a long line of family ties to the community. After starting his career with the village as a garbage man at 19 years old, Massaro rose through the ranks to his current position.

Vilalge of Great Mayor Ralph J. Kreitzman released the following statement Wednesday commending Massaro’s dedication: “Louis  is a talented and dedicated individual who is a super Department of Public Works Superintendent.  In his 30 years of dedicated service to the Village, he has held the job or done the work of every employee in his department.  So, Louis knows the job of every individual in our 18 person sanitation and public works staff, knows his job and is an excellent leader and administrator.”

For the past 10 years as superintendent, Massaro has managed a team of 20 employees he calls “jacks-of-all-trades.” The Public Works Department is responsible for all matters relating to planning, designing, operating, maintaining and managing of public streets, and sanitation. He remained humble about the honor and credits his crew for aiding in the department’s success.

“The guys I work with are good guys,” he said. “When the guys you work with are good it makes you look good.”

Massaro has six years left until he is eligible to retirement, but says he has no plans on stepping down anytime soon.
