The Mineola Chamber of Commerce presented college scholarships to three students at its final meeting of the season on June 18 at Piccola Bussola.

The scholarships were awarded to two Mineola High School students, Fred Lang and Angela McColgan, and Chaminade student Christopher Mehlman.

“We felt there were two kids at the high school who were equally deserving,” said Bill Greene, president of the Mineola Chamber of Commerce.

The awards are normally awarded each year to one graduating senior from Mineola High School and Chaminade High School. The scholarship were awarded in memory of Jerry Mehlman, a Mineola chamber founder, who died in 2011 at age 86.

Lang was all-state and all-county as a track athlete in his senior year, finishing fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in this year’s state competition.

“Freddie’s the embodiment of a scholar athlete. All around, he’s a really good kid,” said Ed Escobar, principal of Mineola High School

He said Lang also ran in a 2,000-meter race at the New Balance national high school track competition in North Carolina in June. He’ll be attending St. Olive College in the fall.

McColgan landed a scholarship to New York University in the fall for playwrighting, according to Escobar, who said she had to submit a screenplay to win the scholarship.

Heller will be attending Catholic University in the fall. He is among the 32 recipients of the 20th Annual Good Deed Awards for Long Island Teenagers this year.
