Mineola Chiefs capture county championship

The Island Now

For the first time in 20 years the Chiefs 10-year-olds won the title and brought home the 2011 Nassau County Championship.

This past Sunday at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, the Chiefs beat the Long Beach Bulldogs 19-7. It was an exciting game, tensions were high, with a county title on the line, but the Chiefs proved to be too much for the Bulldogs in the end. All the boys played and participated in the victory. This brings the Chiefs dream season final winning record to 8-1-1.

The Chiefs offense was on the move, as they proved speed kills, led by quarterback Michael O’Connell (2 TDs, 1 extra point) and strong runs by runningbacks Matt Sluka (1 TD), Lance Costa, Jack Duff and Naz Jackson moved the ball up and down the field against the Bulldogs behind the blocking of Michael LaGinestra, Kevin Parente, Patrick McTiernan, Anthony Giunta and Brandon Coward.

The Chiefs defense was mean and aggressive, making team tackles all over the field. The defensive line of Sante Nicolia, Philip Arnold, Dylan Vincenti, Matt Grimm, Joe Martello, Michael Sinisi, Spenser Warantz, King Welker, Joe Tallini, Vincent Pomara and Joshua Jacob kept the pressure on Bellmore’s offense throughout the game.

Cornerbacks and safeties played defended the house; they were lead by Thomas Albig (interception), Andrew Casoria, Ryan Calderon and Duff. The Linebackers O’Connell, Sluka and Costa attacked the ball with a purpose and finished off the Bulldogs. Scoring is summarized below:

• Matt Sluka. 7-yard touchdown run (Michael O’Connell extra point run)

• Michael O’Connell, 5-yard touchdown run (extra point run failed)

• Michael O’Connell, 45-yard touchdown run (extra point run failed)
