Mineola Chiefs go on offense, win 37-20

The Island Now

This past hot and sunny Sunday, the Chiefs 10-year-olds played a home game at Hampton Stadium and beat the Hicksville Crusaders 37-20.

It was an offensive bonanza, as all the boys played and participated in the victory.

The Chiefs offense led by quarterback Michael O’Connell (2 TD’s) and the strong runs by Running Backs Lance Costa (1 TD), Jack Duff (2 TD’s) and Matt Sluka (1 TD) and Naz Jackson were able to move the ball because of the strong sound blocking by the offensive line of Michael LaGinestra, Kevin Parente, Patrick McTiernan, Anthony Giunta, Brandon Coward, Tight-ends Dylan Vincenti and Philip Arnold.

The Chiefs defense was aggressive, making gang tackles all over the field. The defensive line of Joe Martello, Michael Sinisi, Spenser Warantz, King Welker, Sante Nicolia, Joe Tallini, and Ryan Calderone kept the heat on Hicksville’s offense.

The linebackers O’Connell and Sluka swarmed the ball and finished off the Crusaders. Cornerbacks and safeties were suffocating; they were lead by Matt Grimm (1 interception), Vincent Pomara, Thomas Albig and Andrew Casoria.

Scoring is summarized below:

• Michael O’Connell, 20-yard touchdown run (Matt Sluka extra point run)

• Jack Duff, 23-yard touchdown run (extra point kick failed)

• Michael O’Connell, 75-yard touchdown run (extra point kick failed)
