Money for GS cookies used for scouts

Girl Scouts of Nassau County wishes to refute the information printed in the 2/2 edition of the Great Neck News, the Williston Times, the New Hyde Park Herald Courier and TheIslandNow.com. and submitted by Anne Reiser.

Here in Nassau County, of the $4 per box charged for Girl Scout Cookies, approximately $1 goes back to the baker to cover the cost of ingredients and shipping. The remaining $3 stays in the local market and is used to fund programs for girls; each Troop receives at least $0.55 per box.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the world’s largest business and financial literacy program. In the 86 years that the Girl Scouts Cookie Program has been in existence, it has continuously offered new ways to help girls grow strong.

Girls learn important lessons in goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. The cookie program also teaches girls to appreciate and take pride in the work that they’ve accomplished for themselves and for Girl Scouts.

Because of the earning power of the Girl Scout Cookie Program, no girl is ever turned away from Girl Scouts of Nassau County because of financial need.

Neither Girl Scouts of Nassau County nor Girl Scouts of the USA has a collaboration or relationship with Planned Parenthood, nor do we provide any financial support to this organization.

We believe that health and sexuality are private matters for girls and their families.

The Girl Scout organization, including local councils, does not take a position on abortion or birth control, nor do we endorse or provide funding to organizations that advocate either way on these issues.

Much misinformation has been circulated on this matter in recent years by organizations and individuals who wish to divert Girl Scouts from our mission of building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place
