MTA investigates LIRR card scam

Metropolitan Transportation Authority police officials are investigating a potential debit and credit card scam targeting ticket vending machines located at Long Island Railroad stations in Queens and Nassau County.

MTA police Chief Michael Coan said in a statement that hidden cameras have been found attached to seven ticket machines at LIRR stations in Bayside, Great Neck, Port Washington, Merillon and Greenvale.

MTA detectives and LIRR personnel are checking ticket machines at all LIRR stations, officials said.

Coan also urged anyone to have purchased rail tickets from those stations using a debit or credit card from machines at those stations to immediately check with their bank or credit card company for any unauthorized activity.

Coan said the cameras were found on the underside of a black metal strip placed across the top of the ticket machine and were made to look as though they were part of the machine.
