Multiple departments aid in weekend blazes

House fires in Manhasset and North New Hyde Park that took place within hours of each other on Saturday and Sunday required the assistance of several North Shore fire departments, Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department officials said.

The first took place on Saturday at a residence on Gristmill Lane within Manhasset’s Village of Plandome Manor at 2:45 p.m., as multiple calls were reported to Manhasset-Lakeville’s dispatch and the FireCom communications system, Manhasset-Lakeville Deputy Chief Kirk Candan said.

Though the residence was vacant, two Manhasset-Lakeville firefighters were later transported to a local hospital for minor injuries, Candan said.

Candan said initial Manhasset-Lakeville units found fire raging throughout the 1 1/2-story ranch-style home, with heavy smoke pushing through attic vents.

When firefighting conditions worsened, Manhasset-Lakeville responders were withdrawn from the house, and shortly thereafter a portion of the roof collapsed, Candan said.

Candan said a Firefighter Assist and Search Team from the Port Washington Fire Department then responded and was later replaced by a team from the Roslyn Fire Companies, comprised of the Roslyn Rescue and Roslyn Highlands fire departments.

Neighboring departments from Garden City Park, New Hyde Park, Great Neck Vigilant, Great Neck Alert and Bellerose also either assisted with aid units or provided stand-by coverage on the incident, Candan said.

Manhasset-Lakeville companies 3, 4 and 5 and an ambulance unit responded to the second fire at 10:21 a.m. Sunday after it was reported to the department that smoke was coming from the basement of a Rose Lane residence in New Hyde Park, Candan said.

Manhasset-Lakeville officials said the house was occupied at the time of the fire but there were no injuries reported.

Manhasset-Lakeville Engine 8758 put out the body of the fire from within several bays of the basement ceiling and, Candan said, additional ceiling and walls were later opened and inspected.

The New Hyde Park Fire Department also responded to the fire with a Firefighter Assist and Search Team, Candan said. The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office also arrived to investigate the cause of the fire.

Efforts to reach the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office were unavailing.

Candan said Farrone declared the fire under control within 30 minutes and all units were released from the scene in about an hour.
