Nassau County Police Commissioner Tom Dale was recognized for his service with the New York City Police Department from 1970 to 2011 and with the Nassau County Police Department as police commissioner from 2011 to present. This is the first time a Police Commissioner has received the coveted Six–Star Diamond Award.
“Commissioner Dale continues to serve our residents with distinction,” said Nassau County Executive Mangano. “He is truly deserving of the recognition accorded to him and I am proud to him as a member of our team. His professional experience has been asset to Nassau County since coming on board.”
Dale oversaw the Nassau County Police Department during Hurricanes Irene and Sandy which including the evacuation of approximately 400,000 people and thousands from nursing homes. Under Dale’s leadership, the Nassau County Police Department has utilized intelligence led policing helping maintain the county’s distinction as one of the lowest crime rates in the nation.
Dale joined the New York City Police Department in 1970 as a probationary officer. During his tenure with the NYPD he was promoted to captain of Central Investigations (1991); captain of the 60th Precinct (1993); deputy inspector of the 83rd Precinct (1995); inspector of the 90th Precinct (1997); deputy chief – executive officer patrol of the Bronx (1999); Deputy Chief – executive officer patrol services bureau (2000); and assistant chief – commanding officer patrol Borough of South Queens (2003).
In addition, he was an original member of the NYC/FBI terrorist task force in 1980 where he served as a detective. Dale was an initial responder to the Terrorist attack on 9/11/01 and established the first Police Command and called for the first mobilization of personnel to respond to the World Trade Center disaster. He also developed the police plan for the coordination of the Republican National Convention at Madison Square Garden in the year 2004.
Prior to his appointment as commissioner of the Nassau County Police Department, Dale served as Chief of Personnel for the 52,000 member New York City Police Department for two years.
