Nassau IDA to aid Lumber Road project

The Nassau County Industrial Development Agency has agreed to aid a project to convert the Nassau-Suffolk Lumber Corp.’s former Village of Roslyn location to a mixed-use retail and housing space.

The project would create 20 rental apartments and approximately 22,500 square-feet of retail space, officials said. Officials said the project could be completed by the spring of 2016.

The county, officials said, would aid in demolishing a vacant building at the project’s 17-21 Lumber Road site to remove blight from the village’s downtown area. Two other buildings at the site would be renovated.

The project would create 40 full-time equivalent construction jobs and 44 full-time equivalent permanent positions, officials said, injecting $5.7 million into the county’s economy.

In a statement, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said the project continues his administration’s priority of helping Nassau County residents find viable housing options.

“This project in the Village of Roslyn will assist residents with new housing opportunities while eliminating community blight and generating millions in economic benefit for the community,” Mangano said.

The Village of Roslyn approved the $11 million project during an August trustees meeting after nearly six months of public hearings, despite concerns about the lack of available parking in the area.

The property is currently owned by Lumber Earth Realty LLC, comprised of contractors Kevin Dursun and John Santos, who is also a member of the village’s historic district board.

Efforts to reach Dursun or Santos were unavailing.

At the time of the project’s approval, Santos and Dursun agreed to dedicate to the village a parcel of land for public parking, create a boardwalk area along the property and put $50,000 toward the village’s parking trust fund.
