New Hyde Park claims District title

The boys from New Hyde Park nailed down the District 29 boys’ Minor Division championship in dramatic fashion, scoring a come-from-behind 8-6 victory over Franklin Square to advance in the annual Williamsport Little League tournament. 

Franklin Square’s win over Garden City on Wednesday, July 3, set up a second match-up against the team from New Hyde Park in 10 days, this time to decide the District championship on Friday, July 5. 

NHP’s Steven Brendel pitched with control, throwing effectively into the fifth inning and holding the dangerous Franklin Square offense to just one run.  

Franklin Square finally came alive and mounted an offensive attack in the fifth, taking a 6-4 into the decisive sixth inning.  

New Hyde Park was down to their final out in the top of the sixth, when they reached down deep and came up with timely and clutch hits to turn the tide.  

Joe Pomara smacked a double, Julian Belardo beat out the throw for an infield hit and Matt Cippola had a hard-hit single to load the bases. Mike Dominguez then belted a double to drive home the go-ahead run before Nick O’Shea hit a long shot to score an insurance run.  

Julian Belardo took the mound and shut Franklin Square down in the bottom of the sixth to seal the deal for his second save of the tournament and his team’s District 29 championship.  

New Hyde Park moves on to play in the NY Section V Tournament where they face other district finalists from the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island.  The first game will be played at Rath Park in Franklin Square on Saturday, July 13 at 9 a.m.  

Offenses dominates as the New Hyde Park bests Garden City South, 9-8.

The bats were busy at Willis Avenue Field on Monday, June 24, and when the dust cleared, New Hyde Park had a 9-8 win over Garden City South in six innings for their first win in the 2013 Little League District 29 Tournament.

Hitters on both sides were strong at the plate as the teams combined for 17 hits, including seven extra base hits. Phil Iandoli was solid at the plate for New Hyde Park, going 2-for-3, doubling in the first and singling in the third, with an RBI and two runs scored. 

New Hyde Park started strong, scoring three runs on three doubles in the first inning.  In the third, New Hyde Park added another on a ground out by Aaron Glitelman, scoring Matthew Cipolla. New Hyde Park added four more runs in the top of the fourth. 

Ethan Libonati kicked things off with a single, plating Julian Belardo and Steven Brendel.  Garden City South came back strong, but came up just short in the end.  Ethan Libonati pitched for NHP, allowing only two runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out 10, walking five and surrendered no hits.

New Hyde Park offense too much

for Franklin Square in 12-2 rout 

New Hyde Park 10U refused to relinquish the lead after grabbing it early against Franklin Square, recording a 12-2 victory on Tuesday, July 2, at Willis Ave. Field for NHP’s third win in Little League’s District 29 tournament.

Eleven runs in the first three innings allowed New Hyde Park to put the game away early.  

New Hyde Park took an early lead, 2-0, but Franklin Square tied the game up in the second.  The bats then went wild for NHP, scoring 10 more runs over the next three innings, including four runs in the bottom of the third.  Helping get those runs were Emmanuel Ajewole, Michael Hayes, Aaron Gitelman, Matt Cipolla, Steven Brendel, Michael Dominguez, Phil Iandoli, Joe Pomara, Julian Belardo, Nick O’Shea and Justin Obidienzo.  

NHP had RBI doubles by Michael Dominguez and Phil Iandoli in the first.  A two-run double by Joe Pomara and an RBI-single by Julian Belardo in the second inning helped New Hyde Park put some more runs on the board early.  Nick O’Shea led New Hyde Park’s offense, reaching base three times, scoring two runs with one RBI and doubling in the fifth inning. 

Justin Obidienzo got it done on the mound on the way to a win, allowing only two runs over four and two-thirds innings.
