New Hyde Park Kool Kats score two wins

The Island Now

It was a great weekend of soccer for the New Hyde Park Wildcats GU11 Kool Kats with two victories in  LIJSL play, a 5-0 win over Valley Stream on Saturday and 5-1 win over Northport Sunday.

The Kool Kats traveled to Valley Stream and played a solid all-round game Saturday. The combination of Amanda Garcia in goal and the defense of Jackie Jara, Jenna Neu, and Kaitriona Smith locked down Valley Stream’s offense and held them scoreless. Offensively, the Kool Kats attacked all game. They were relentless and had goals by Maria Poulos, Mary Langan, Bridget Slaski and Sara Aronov. An own goal by Valley Stream’s defender made it a 5-0 victory for NHP.

On next day, the Kool Kats traveled east to Northport for an important NY Cup game and came away with their best all-around performance of the fall. In all aspects of the game, the team looked awesome. Missing two of their players, Caitlin Sheehan and Isabella Bigeni, the Kool Kats came out and controlled the entire match.

Once again, Amanda Garcia in goal and Jackie Jara, Jenna Neu and Kaitriona Smith on defense, shut down their opponent. Offensively, the team just would not stop. Goals by Nicolette Caneda, Mary Langan, Sara Aronov, Sofia Quijada and Maria Poulos gave the Kool Kats 10 goals for the weekend. Northport played with heart and never gave up. They scored their lone goal on a loose ball  following a great save by Amanda Garcia.

The 5-1 win and second place standing in NY Cup group play has the Kool Kats in the hunt to advance to the knock off rounds in the spring.

New Hyde Park TOP Soccer athletes participate in Cosmos’s tournament

On Oct. 20, seventeen NHP Wildcats TOP soccer athletes played in a Cosmos’s TOP soccer tournament.  The event took place before the Cosmos’s game at Hofstra University. As the athletes took the field, they were amazed at the size of the field, the artificial turf and their parents and fans sitting in bleachers.

After becoming accustomed to the environment, the athletes began their games. The Seniors consisted of Samantha Duggan, Joe Caban, Mary and David Glass, Billy Russo, Matthew Saraiva, Andrea Matteo, Sebastian Gonzalez, Tim Roth plus a few guest players from other clubs. Rich Bletsch was the coach for the Seniors.

The Intermediates were made up of Chris Cooney, Petros D’Amico, Daniel and Chris Menendez, Lucas Mitacchione, Matthew Lausev, John Bertuccio, and Sophocles Gianakis.  The teams were coached by Maiken Bursig, Kristina Horan, and Neil Duggan.

Seniors 4, Coaches 1. The Seniors took to the field and challenged the coaches to a match.  After their competitive game against Kellenberg last week, they were ready to take on the coaches.  With a final score of 4-1, the coaches didn’t have a chance except for the lone goal by Coach Matt Bletsch.  The coaches couldn’t find their end of the field.  Coach Rich Bletsch had a tough time in goal.  The referee Brian Evers wasn’t too kind to the coaches either since the coaches committed foul after foul.  Sam Ho put two in the net and Billy Russo and Sebastian Gonzalez also scored. It was a strong defensive game by the Seniors’ Tristan Yang and Debbie Chin.

Intermediates

Green Ninjas Turtles 0, Red Wildcats 2. The Green Ninjas Turtles had a great game, but unfortunately, they were not able to score against the Red Wildcats.

The Green Ninjas Turtles’ Demetri Georgedakis, celebrating his feast day, was all over the field dribbling.  He made great passes to his teammates Alex Laroia and Steven Johnson.  Steven Johnson and Kyle Harattaty both were strong in goal for the Ninjas Turtles.

Red Wildcat Stephen DiBiasi scored the first goal on a wicked shot to the corner.  Chris and Daniel Menendez were dynamite in midfield.  Daniel also played part of the game in goal.  Nicolas Krieger had some tremendous passes to John Bertuccio and Josh Hom, who added the second goal for the Wildcats.

Juniors

Green Team 9, Red Team 9. The Green team decide to call themselves the “ I don’ts”-meaning I do not want to stop playing soccer.   And both teams did not want to stop playing on this beautiful fall day.

All the athletes on the Green team scored:   Connor Fitzgerald (2), Seamus, McWeeney (2), Kyle and Jaydon Marquardt and David Cheung (2).

The Red team also played well and each Wildcat put the ball in the net.  Coach Mary Jo wasn’t  too good as a goalie but then again, she was playing for both teams.   Desmond O’Callaghan, Jesse and James Sarro, Lucas Mitacchione, Bryan Cisneros, Andrew Faller, Elijah and Abigail Kim and Luke Schwartz made up the Red Wildcats team.   With the ball flying up and down the field, both teams put on a spectacular display of offensive skill work.
