New Hyde Park Subway robbed twice in a week

The second robbery in a week at a New Hyde Park sandwich shop was unrelated to the string of knifepoint robberies across Nassau County, police said.

The assailant, described as a white man standing 5-foot-10, entered the Subway shop at 1201 Jericho Turnpike at 9:10 p.m. on Friday, and approached the cashier covering his left hand as though he had a gun, police said.

The robber never showed a gun, but demanded money from the cash register, police said.

After the cashier gave him an undisclosed amount of money, the man ran northbound on North 12th Street, police said.

There was no one else in the store at the time, police said, and no one was hurt.

The man was described as of average build wearing a green hooded sweatshirt and a white surgical mask across his face.

The suspect in Friday’s robbery is described similarly to the man who robbed a Williston Park Dunkin’ Donuts at knifepoint twice within a week in April.

Employees at the Dunkin’ Donuts store said last month they think the same person robbed their store on April 8 and April 13.

Police said the culprit of those robberies was wearing a mask and a hooded sweatshirt on both occasions. An image showed him wearing a light-colored sweatshirt one time. The second sweatshirt was light with block lettering, police have said.

A knife-wielding robber who police have called their top priority also held up the Subway store at the corner of Jericho Turnpike and North 12th Street on the morning of April 25.

The assailant, described as a black man, standing between 5-foot-8 and 6 feet tall, brandished a kitchen knife at the cashier, who said she was alone in the store, and took $457 before running north on North 12th Street.

The crime was the most recent in a string of 11 knifepoint robberies the man has committed, but was the first to occur in the morning, police said last week.

The robbery pattern started at a New Hyde Park Dunkin’ Donuts on March 1 and has affected businesses from Oceanside to Massapequa Park, police have said.

The other 10 crimes have happened between 9 p.m. and 12 a.m., police  have said.

The robber is described weighing 170 pounds and usually wears a dark-colored scarf or bandana over his face, police have said.

Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the man’s arrest. Anyone with information about any of the crimes can call 1-800-244-8477 to leave an anonymous tip.
